Scotland’s Food and Drink Event Diary 2009

From Dumfries and Galloway in the south to Shetland in the north, there is always something going on for the food-loving visitor to Scotland. Just some of these food festivals are listed below.

APPETITE FOR AYRSHIRE & ARRAN

Throughout Ayrshire & Arran
Appetite for Ayrshire & Arran takes place in April and is designed to show off the wealth of dining and fine food and drink opportunities that Ayrshire & Arran has to offer. Combining showcase events with special offers (including a tempting variety of fixed-price menus, exceptional food and drink events, retail opportunities and 'dine & duvet' offers), the project will demonstrate that Ayrshire & Arran is the perfect destination for enjoying fabulous local food and drink.

CELTIC FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL
26th April, 11am – 4pm
Scottish Crannog Centre, Kenmore, Perthshire
Going back to the Iron Age at the Scottish Crannog Centre needn’t mean mouldy old grub. The aroma of Celtic spit-roast at this food and drink festival would be enough to make anyone’s mouth water. The festival’s prehistoric cooking demonstrations include not just the spit roast, but pit cooking, bread baking and other ancient techniques, local smoked meats, dairy products and tasty herb and meat dishes all washed down with authentic beverages.

PAISLEY BEER FESTIVAL
April/May (TBC)
Paisley Town Hall, Paisley
The Paisley Beer Festival gives visitors the chance to taste what local breweries have to offer. The annual event attracts thousands keen to sample over 130 real cask conditioned ales and ciders, not to mention an array of foreign beers.
The four-day festival, held at Paisley’s Town Hall, will feature the acclaimed local Kelburn Brewing Company, which recently won the ‘Best Bitter in Scotland’ award for its Goldihops ale.
The brewers will pit their finest ales against the competition in a bid for the gold, silver and bronze medals awarded by a judging panel.

THE SPIRIT OF SPEYSIDE WHISKY FESTIVAL
May 1st – 10th
All across Speyside, Aberdeenshire
Celebrate whisky, music, food and fun at the biggest ever Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival at the opening event of Homecoming Scotland’s Whisky Month. Whisky lovers can look forward to a 10-day extravaganza across stunning Speyside, a region which produces some of the most famous malts in the world.
The special Homecoming Scotland 2009 programme will mark the event's 10th anniversary, bringing some exciting new events, including a series of distillery open door days, smugglers’ trails and whisky/food matching dining opportunities.
There is also the Scottish Serenade - a dramatic musical celebration of Speyside's heritage and traditions. And don't forget to take in the way-marked Malt Whisky Trail. With only three out of the top 10 best selling malts produced outside Speyside, this is a festival not to be missed!

A TASTE OF DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY

The World Famous Old Blacksmith’s Shop Centre, Gretna Green
Savour the Flavours of Dumfries & Galloway at this tasty event celebrating Dumfries & Galloway’s food and drink. There will be plenty of delicious goodies for visitors to sample, enjoy and buy as food and drink producers from across Scotland’s south west showcase their treats, share their passions and tell the story of their food and drink at this friendly event.

LOCH FYNE FOOD FAIR
9th – 10th May (11am – 6pm)
Next to the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar, Clachan, Cairndow, Highlands.
A celebration of local food with a farmers’ market and food stalls including producers such as Winston Churchill Venison, Isabella’s Preserves, Gillies Fine Foods and Fyne Organics. Drinks are supplied by Fyne Ales plus specially selected wines from Europe and New Zealand.
Stalls open 11am - 6pm. Free admission during the day. No tickets required. (parking £3 per vehicle).

SPIRIT OF THE WEST
16th – 17th May Inveraray Castle, Inveraray, Argyll, PA32 8XF
The Whisky Coast, Scotland’s west coast whisky trail has announced a spectacular weekend event on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May 2009 at Inveraray Castle as part of Homecoming Scotland’s Whisky Month in May. The ticketed two day event will be a celebration of Scotland’s west coast whisky and the rich culture and dramatic scenery in which it is created.
Spirit of the West is inspired by the historic community cultures, tales, mysteries and theatrical scenery that lie behind every single malt. Whisky tasting, food sampling and cookery demonstrations will run alongside historical trails, fashion shows, music, arts and crafts, golfing activities and a ceilidh on Saturday night.
Running from Arran to Skye and covering both mainland locations and islands, The Whisky Coast is a collaboration of 16 whisky distilleries, 20 hotels, restaurants that boast some of Scotland’s finest produce and picturesque golf courses.

TRAQUAIR MEDIEVAL FAYRE

Innerleithen, Peebleshire

Step back in time to see Traquair House as it would have been in medieval times. Spectacular battle re-enactments in the avenue, Living History displays in the house and grounds as well as falconry, jesters, early music and a delicious spit roast washed down with Fayre Ale brewed exclusively for the weekend by the original 18th century brewery at the house.

ISLAY MALT AND MUSIC FESTIVAL
23rd – 31st May Various venues, Islay
Feis Ile – the Islay Festival of Malt and Music – was founded by the local people of Islay in 1986 to celebrate the heritage and culture of Isle of Islay.
Since 2000 Feis Ile has been run in conjunction with the distilleries of Islay and Jura and Port Ellen Maltings. Each distillery has its own open day, putting on special events. Islay has a wealth of musical talent which is very much in evidence at the ceilidhs, while mainland artists are also brought to the island for the festival week.

TASTE OF EDINBURGH
28th – 31st May
The Meadows, Edinburgh
The Taste of Edinburgh festival is an upmarket food and drink festival set in the beautiful outdoor surroundings of The Meadows. A celebration of Scottish food and drink, Taste of Edinburgh gives food lovers the chance to enjoy the best that Scottish restaurants, chefs, and food and drink producers have to offer. Festival-goers can sample dishes from 20 of Edinburgh’s top restaurants and enjoy food from the rising star chefs in Scotland, as well as Michelin-starred Martin Wishart and Andrew Fairlie.
Learn all the little tricks of the trade at the Chef’s Theatre, and find out more about picking a great complementary wine at the Wine Experience.

TASTE OF GRAMPIAN
6th June Thainstone Centre, Inverurie
This one-day food and drink festival is a great day out for all the family. Visitors can discover and sample the wide range of high quality food and drink products from Grampian in the north east of Scotland. Local producers invite you to taste and buy the finest smoked salmon, mouth-watering shortbread, delicious ice-cream, sumptuous prime roast beef, creamy fudge and maybe a dram or two of the best Scottish whiskies from local distilleries and much more.
The festival programme also includes music, children's entertainment, arts and crafts, cookery competitions and demonstrations from local and celebrity chefs.

ROYAL HIGHLAND SHOW
25th – 28th June The Highland Showgrounds, Ingliston, Edinburgh
The Royal Highland Show 2009 is due to take place at the Ingliston Showground, Edinburgh, from 25-28 June as part of the nationwide Homecoming Scotland 2009 celebrations. Fabulous food and drink are one of the highlights of the show attracting foodies from near and far. Over 100 Scottish food and drink exhibitors will attend alongside gourmet suppliers from across the UK. There are also cookery demonstrations and produce competitions with plenty of opportunities to sample along the way.

FLAVOUR OF SHETLAND

Flavour of Shetland is a major outdoor event showcasing the very best food, drink, music, craft and culture. Last year's cookery demonstrations were provided by Chairman of the Master Chefs of Great Britain George McIvor and fellow Master Chef Colin Bussey. The cookery demonstrations showcasing the range and quality of the islands’ produce, attract huge crowds.
The event will be buzzing with music performances, craft stalls and demonstrations, storytelling, children's activities plus a summer Up Helly Aa Viking parade.

TARBERT SEAFOOD FESTIVAL

This annual festival is set around the beautiful natural harbour at Tarbert on Loch Fyne and showcases some of the finest and tastiest seafood in Scotland. Cookery demonstrations, street entertainment, exhibitions, seafood, craft stalls, live music and a carnival parade are just some of the great events on offer.

SCOTISH TRADITIONAL BOAT FESTIVAL & FOOD FAIR
4th - 5th July
Portsoy, Aberdeenshire
Over four spectacular days in picturesque Portsoy on the Moray Firth coast, explore your roots and take part in a colourful celebration of Scotland's great cultural heritage. Witness a fabulous gathering of historic and beautiful traditional boats, fascinating craft demonstrations, non-stop music, song and dance and visual art.
One of the most popular elements of the festival is the now well established Food Fair, featuring all that is best in the region’s fish, meat, confectionary, cheese and drink. CLASSIC MALTS CRUISE
11th – 25th July West Coast of Scotland
The annual Classic Malts Cruise attracts sailors from around the world to the famous scenery and distilleries of Scotland's West Coast. From Oban to Talisker and back south to Lagavulin, the sheltered sites of the distilleries remain a welcoming haven and places of great hospitality for sailors and this tour cruise allows participants to get to the heart of it with special distillery tours, ceilidhs and of course, lots of great sailing.

BIG TENT FESTIVAL
25th – 26th July
Falkland Centre for Stewardship, Falkland Estate, Fife
Food accounts for some 25% of our greenhouse gas emissions and it will be impossible to reduce our country's carbon footprint without big changes in what we eat, and how we grow, market, process, package, preserve and distribute food. Food therefore not surprisingly plays a major part at Big Tent, Scotland’s largest Eco Festival with many local growers and producers taking part. The Food Village and Demonstration Tent is brimming with the very best in local, organic and seasonal produce to taste and buy and there is a busy programme of cooking displays from the best chefs in the region.

GOURMET GLASGOW FOOD AND DRINK FESTVAL

Food and drink certainly take centre stage in Glasgow each summer when the annual Gourmet Glasgow Festival takes place in August. This festival features special foodie events and the ever-popular Dine Around offer - a two course meal for just £15. As well as dining offers and special events in restaurants, the city plays host to a weekend of demonstrations from some of Glasgow's favourite restaurants.

WHISKY FRINGE
8th - 9th August
Mansfield Traquair, Edinburgh
Scheduled to take place during the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe, when the city is buzzing with international visitors, the line-up of whisky distillers and bottlers includes Arran, Benriach, Bruichladdich, Macallan, Morrison Bowmore, Moet Hennessey and Old Pulteney. Visitors are simply given a nosing glass and a programme and helped find their way through over 200 whiskies.

FOODIES AT THE FESTIVAL
21 - 23rd August
Foodies at the Festival is one of the main food events at the Edinburgh festival, serving up popular food and drink masterclasses. Classes will be held in areas ranging from chocolate to specialty cheeses. There are more stalls than ever and a new area for hot food. There will also be a cafe-style seating area for visitors. A Chefs Theatre will show cookery demonstrations from top Scottish chefs.

ARBROATH SEA FEST
The annual Arbroath Sea Fest offers entertainment for all the family. The diverse programme varies from year to year but regular features include boat-dressing competitions, fishing displays, train displays and cookery demonstrations. Raft racing takes participants past the spectacular cliffs north of Arbroath. For those who enjoy a bit of retail therapy there is a wide range of stalls selling everything from fresh seafood to handmade jewellery, crafts and confectionery.
The star of the show is undoubtedly the Arbroath Smokie - haddock smoked over hardwood - but past years have also seen trout specialities, suckling pig, venison and ostrich meat, available from the Smokie Trail, comprising 70-odd stalls along the harbour.

HIGHLAND FEAST

Across the Highlands & Islands
This is the 11th successful year of the North’s biggest food and drink festival staged in a number of diverse and dramatic locations across the beautiful Highlands and Islands. DUNDEE FLOWER AND FOOD FESTIVAL
4th – 6th September
Camperdown Country Park, Dundee
The premier show of its kind in Scotland, Dundee Flower and Food Festival offers a three-day menu of food, flowers and fun for all the family.
Set in marquees in the magnificent Camperdown Country Park, the event provides a showcase for fabulous floral and garden displays and cookery demonstrations, as well as featuring competitions, craft stalls, fashion shows and children's activities.

THE ISLE OF BARRA WHISKY GALORE FESTIVAL
18th – 20th September
The first ever Whisky Galore Festival takes place on the beautiful island of Barra in 2009, 60 years after the release of the hilarious 1949 Ealing comedy. Events include screenings of the epic film, which was filmed on the island; island tours, including visits to film location sites; re-enactments; whisky tastings and whisky hunts; ceilidhs and dances; genealogy talks; traditional dancing workshops and lots more to showcase the unique culture of this Hebridean island.

ORGANIC FOOD FESTIVAL

Come and browse, taste and buy in a magical marketplace full to the brim with gorgeous organic goodies. As well as food and drink that’s better for you, better for animals, and better for the planet; there’ll be fabulous fashion and textiles, health and beauty, and ethical household products. There’s also a packed programme of activities for kids, cookery demos, producer talks, and tutored tastings hosted by high profile chefs, foodies, and gardening experts.

EAST RENFREWSHIRE FOOD FESTIVAL
20th September
Eastwood Park, Giffnock
East Renfrewshire Food Festival will consist of cooking demonstrations by well known chefs from within and around the East Renfrewshire area. Local Scottish produce will be promoted by involving local schools. Visitors can expect a ‘feast’ of activities including tasting demonstrations, cookery workshops, master classes and demonstrations from cookery experts. A farmers market will also be present so visitors can take a taste of East Renfrewshire away with them. A programme of events and special offers is being ‘cooked’ up ready for the event in September.

This festival celebrates the country's fine food and drink traditions with an exciting and mouth-watering programme. Participating restaurants, food outlets and visitor attractions will stage a variety of events and offer a selection of dishes featuring East Lothian produce. This year enjoy the Slow Food Summer Fair in North Berwick, one of Glenkinchie Distillery's famous ceilidhs, the ever-popular Haddington Farmers' Market, tastings and demonstrations from local food producers and a Family Food and Fun Day at the Scottish Seabird Centre.

LIVING FOOD AT CAWDOR CASTLE
29th September 10am – 5pm Cawdor Castle, Highlands
The Living Food event was first launched in 2006 and is a celebration of organic and sustainable food. Attended in 2006 by over 3000 people, it set a bench mark for the quality of its produce, as well as providing education and information on healthy eating and local produce. Held in marquees in the beautiful grounds of the castle, Living Food will be even bigger this year featuring entertainment for all ages including special guests, over 50 produce stalls, informative food and drink lectures, live music and cookery demonstrations.
Acclaimed head chef Charlie Lockley, from 4AA rosette Boath House, an exponent of slow food and organic cookery will be providing a cookery demonstration at the event.

PEEBLES FOOD FESTIVAL
23rd - 25th October
Locations Across Peebles
This is the 3rd year of the Peebles Food Festival. The festival in the pretty Borders town of Peebles includes this year a Ready Steady Cook event; healthy eating cook offs in local primary schools; wine and food matching events and a 7 course dinner showcasing the skills of local chefs. There’s also a large farmers market with cookery demonstrations.

A TASTE OF DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY

Savour the Flavours of Dumfries & Galloway at this tasty event celebrating Dumfries & Galloway food and drink. There will be plenty of delicious goodies for visitors to sample, enjoy and buy as food and drink producers from across Scotland’s south west showcase their treats, share their passions and tell the story of their food and drink at this friendly event. Previously known as ‘Feast of Galloway’, 2009 is the fifth year that Forestry Commission Scotland’s Kirroughtree Visitor Centre has hosted this successful food event. The event has been so popular with visitors, local people and food producers that two new events are being hosted at Gretna Green and at Cream o’ Galloway, Gatehouse, to try and replicate the success of the original event.
