Teenagers are opting to eat fresh organic vegetables and think up exciting culinary delights, thanks to a new regional service that looks to be breaking the barriers between kids and their greens.

Mum of three, Nicky Barron, says her children Sophie (17), Billie (16) and Josh (18), are enjoying a healthier lifestyle thanks to the introduction of fresh organic produce delivered direct to their door each week, from the area’s new franchise of The Farmshed. Not only are the family keen to eat the assortment of fruit and vegetables, it has prompted new found culinary skills amongst the siblings, with the challenge of using all the contents of the organic box before the next fresh delivery arrives.

Nicky Barron (43) of Conway Road, Doxey, said “Being introduced to The Farmshed has been fantastic, especially for my daughters.

We all get really excited on the day the box arrives. We plan meals that use the contents of the box, which ensures we don’t waste anything.

The children, who all share in cooking the meals, enjoy the challenge of using all the fruit and vegetables up and it has increased their intake of healthy organic food.

It’s a local and flexible service, which fits around my hectic lifestyle. I don’t have to deal with the burden of the supermarket so much anymore.”

Launched in January, the Staffordshire franchise of The Farmshed, aims to provide a fresh approach to healthy eating and to make it as convenient as possible for individuals and families. They provide boxes of organic produce that are sourced locally and tailored to meet people’s everyday needs.

Being green is at the pinnacle of The Farmshed ethos, keeping their carbon footprint to a minimum and supporting the local economy by working closely with suppliers in the area.

Miss Barron, who works as a drama practitioner, says it is a great way for her family to be environmentally friendly with very little effort.

“It’s less packaging and the boxes are returnable, cutting down on our waste and helping us to be friendly to the planet.”

The launch of The Farmshed in Staffordshire follows the success of the company in the North West, where it already supplies more than 1,000 homes with various fresh food and goods. Launched in 2007,

The Farmshed has rapidly grown and been recognised for its innovative and creative approach, winning several awards including the Health Business Award 2010.

Owners Robert and Ursula Edwards, who are behind the new franchise, say they are not surprised with the appeal of The Farmshed in the region and that the Barron family are one of many success stories.

Mrs Edwards of Cannock Road, Stafford, said “When we came across The Farmshed, we absolutely loved the concept and knew it was something we wanted to put our time and energy behind.
We knew if we loved the idea, others would too. We are thrilled it is having such a great impact on the younger generation in the area.”
