Former Masterchef finalist Billy Law promises to unlock the real secrets of local Malaysian cuisine in a tour of his home country in an eight-day tour designed by food lovers for food lovers.

“Australians love Malaysian food but I want to show there’s so much more to my home cuisine than laksa!” says Law. “Malaysian cuisine is a crazy mash-up of Malay, Chinese and Indian food. This tour is for people who want to eat like a local, meet the people behind the food and learn how to cook like a Malaysian auntie!”

The eight day tour includes visits to the bustling capital, Kuala Lumpur, the charming historic town of Melaka and the foodies’ paradise of Penang.

Sydney chef and restaurateur Jackie M will host a cooking demonstration in Melaka after a tour of the local wet markets. “Malaysian food isn’t hard to cook but there are definitely a few tips and tricks that I’m happy to share,” says Jackie M.

Law says his tour will be an insider’s guide to Malaysia. “Kuala Lumpur is a thriving city, but it’s also very old.

We’ve organised a heritage walking tour with a local tour guide who knows all the back streets and old stories. It’s not going to be your average tour with a guy holding a flag at the front!”

Budding chefs will be able to expand their skills with a hands-on cooking class at Bayan Indah Culinary Retreat with a menu of traditional Malay village (kampung) dishes.

Law will also be tossing the wok with a cooking class at Tropical Spice Garden in Penang following a tour of the picturesque spice garden.

In Penang, the tour will take in the wet market, Little India and visits to a shrimp paste and a soy sauce factory (subject to availability).

The premium tour has been capped at eight people to allow a personalised experience. Law says, “We want to make sure everyone feels welcome and looked after, not crammed like sardines onto a big bus with forty people.”

The 2013 tour runs from 31 October through til 7 November 2013, starting in Kuala Lumpur and finishing in Penang.
