la colombe: the winter tasting menu

August 2, 2010

Last Thursday our bookclub gathered at La Colombe for a long planned and much anticipated dinner.
I am always filled with excitement when I go to my favorite restaurant, and once again a truly memorable meal and evening was had.
The American couple celebrating a romantic anniversary may have found the eight quite loud women slightly less than ideal, but [...]

quaint lunch spots in the burbs: starlings and orchid cafe

July 1, 2010

Luckily my lifestyle is such that while I am still a working girl, I am able to ‘do lunch’ with some of the friends that are not.
These two spots are lovely little restaurants to meet a friend for lunch when trekking around the mountain to the  Southern Suburbs.
STARLINGS
It’s a wildly popular little spot to meet for [...]

kyoto garden sushi: its one of the best

June 29, 2010

I am embarrassed to admit that up until now I had never eaten at Kyoto garden sushi before. And this is not through a lack of desire to, but for various reasons it just hadn’t happened.
It’s regarded by many as amongst the top three places to eat sushi in the city, the other being Nobu [...]

ultima tapa: a piece of spain on long street

June 10, 2010

Ultima Tapa is Scott, the owner of the brilliant Kyoto Garden Sushi’s new project. I had heard about it and was very keen to try, being a fan of tapas and multiple course eating.
I popped in on Tuesday with a friend to check it out and an interesting evening unraveled itself.
Stepping into the small and intimate [...]

massimo’s pizza club: i love

May 28, 2010

There are some restaurants that offer half and half pizza’s, which I really like as I can never decide what to pick and I also like to have multiple flavour experiences in one meal. Then there are others that simply can’t do this, or won’t do this, which I have always found confusing since they have all the toppings for all [...]

the sidewalk cafe: vredehoek

May 19, 2010

I had heard a lot of good things about the Sidewalk Cafe so booked to go a few weeks back for supper.  It was a Friday night.  They were very busy and I could only get a table at 8.30.  No problem, Carlyles which is a semi local of mine, is just down the road so perfect [...]

bar bar black sheep restaurant: riebeek-kasteel

May 6, 2010

It’s a funky little restaurant nestled smack in the middle of downtown Riebeek-Kasteel, and we went there on Saturday for lunch during the Olive Festival.
It was a very busy day and a band was playing in the courtyard. We were charged a R25 cover, even though we were eating AND drinking in the restaurant next door.
The restaurant is eclectic [...]

beefcakes: a pink burger bar

April 20, 2010

It’s a pink restaurant, on the pink strip which does a really good burger.
Its kind of an all American diner and has a downstairs dance floor which opens up at 21.30 with only eighties and nineties music (with lyrics), so your evening can evolve into a bit of a party if you so wish. Abba, Kylie, you get the vibe.  There is [...]

thai cafe – hout bay

April 3, 2010

Stopped off at Thai Cafe in Hout Bay for a quick phad thai after hiking up Chapmans Peak yesterday.  All round a nice little experience.  One had the pork and one had the chicken and both were enjoyed.  We were not hungry enough to have the tom yum goong as well (the acid test as far as thai eateries go), due to [...]

sandbar camps bay – argus day and lance armstrong

March 14, 2010

The Sandbar in Camps Bay is in the perfect location generally, but today it was the perfect spot to sit and have lunch and watch the Argus cyclists come zooming past.
I had been up and about much earlier in the day to go and see my hero- Lance Armstrong  on his final approach a couple of kays [...]
